When this service may be useful

  • You want a clear record of a change of name.
  • Different organisations hold inconsistent versions of your name or personal details.
  • You need to understand what supporting documents an organisation may request.

What you can expect

We focus on the specific legal task you want completed. We review the available information, identify any important date, clarify the outcome you are seeking and then confirm the proposed work before substantive time is incurred.

  • Appropriate draft personal document
  • Practical execution guidance
  • Notification checklist
  • Signposting for witnessing or certification where needed

Enrolled and unenrolled deed polls

An unenrolled deed poll is a change-of-name document executed by the person changing name. Enrolment is a separate public court process with eligibility, evidence, publication and privacy implications. Enrolment is not automatically required for a valid change of name, but individual organisations set their own evidence policies.

Adult and child name changes

An adult route normally requires capacity, intention and proper execution. A child’s name change raises parental-responsibility and consent questions; where everyone with parental responsibility does not agree, a court order may be required. See our Children and Parenting Arrangements service before attempting a disputed child-name change.

Execution and practical use

The document must be completed and witnessed in the required way. Afterward, organisations commonly updated include HM Passport Office, DVLA, employers, banks, pension providers, insurers, schools, GP or NHS records, utility providers and professional bodies. Each organisation may ask for originals, certified copies or additional evidence.

What to send first

  • Current and proposed full names and the reason for the change.
  • Proof of identity, address, nationality and age where relevant.
  • Any previous name-change, marriage or civil-partnership documents.
  • For a child, birth certificate and details of everyone with parental responsibility and their consent.
  • Any organisation-specific evidence requirement already received.

Frequently asked questions

Must every deed poll be enrolled?

No. Enrolled and unenrolled routes are different. Whether an organisation accepts a particular document is governed by its own evidence requirements.

Can one parent change a child’s name?

That depends on parental responsibility, consent and any court orders. Do not proceed on the assumption that one signature is sufficient.

Does a deed poll update records automatically?

No. The holder must contact each organisation and satisfy its document requirements.

Is a certified copy or notary always required?

No. Requirements differ. Ask the receiving organisation whether it needs an original, certified copy, notarisation, apostille or other evidence.

Fees, guidance and next steps

Documents, Certification & Independent Advice · View guide fees · Read supporting Insights · Request a Case Review

Clients in Dagenham, East London and elsewhere in England and Wales can request an initial review. Remote work is available where the nature of the service, identity checks and any third-party requirements permit it; in-person appointments are by prior arrangement.

How it works

  1. Send the essentials: a concise summary, the key document and any deadline.
  2. Suitability check: we assess whether the requested task falls within our lawful and professional scope.
  3. Scope and price: we confirm what is included, important exclusions, who will undertake or supervise the work and the fee or charging basis.
  4. Advice or drafting: we complete the agreed work and explain the practical next step.
  5. Referral where required: if reserved, separately regulated or specialist work is needed, we explain that clearly rather than extending the service beyond its proper scope.

Guide fees for this service

These guide prices apply to clearly defined work of ordinary complexity. Before substantive work begins, we confirm the task, the person providing or supervising it and the price or charging basis in writing. Your written quote will confirm whether VAT applies and the total price payable before substantive work begins. No tax or other charge will be added unless it is clearly identified in the quote.

Deed poll / straightforward personal document £100–£175
Supporting letter or document review from £150

Urgency, unusually large document volumes, additional conferences or work outside the agreed scope may require a revised quote. We will normally agree that with you before carrying out the additional work.

Scope and regulatory limits

Phrasing Legal does not administer oaths or provide notarial services. Some organisations, overseas authorities or transactions may require a notary, a solicitor acting in a specifically authorised capacity, or another prescribed form of authentication.

Whether an activity is reserved or separately regulated depends on the substance of the work, not merely the name used for the service. We therefore assess the requested task before accepting instructions.
